When new puppies go home, I often get asked “What is the best brush for a pomeranian? Or “What shampoo should I get?” So to make things easier, I have compiled a list of everything you might need, from brushes to food, plus links to products that I personally love! If you have any questions, please reach out!

Brushes:

What is the best brush for a Pomeranian?  There are 3 types of brushes that you should ideally have. A slicker brush, a comb, and a pin brush. For a puppy, a slicker brush can do most of the work, but as your pom matures and gets an adult coat, a pin brush and a comb will be ideal for detangling and de-shedding. Brushing your Pomeranian every few days (especially between 8 weeks to 1 year old!) is extremely important. Please make sure you are using proper technique and brushing all the way to the skin.

You may also want to grab a brushing spray, to prevent breakage and keep the coat conditioned!

Food:

The food your Pomeranian eats will influence their overall health. A pomeranian with a poor diet will lack a beautiful coat, and they may develop ear infections, joint problems, or other issues. We believe that there are TONS of great dog food options out there, but we urge you to choose something that is good quality. We recommend foods that are fish based, as we find that most Pomeranians can thrive best on a fish formula. Choose a food based on your budget, and take into account any special needs your specific dog might have including age, allergies, etc.

Dry food is not the only option! We personally feed a mix of fresh cooked food + kibble to our Pomeranians. There are also great Raw food and fresh food options to buy!

Shampoo and Conditioner:

The best shampoo for a pomeranian can depend on its age, coat texture and coat length. I have included a few options in our list, but if you feel lost or have questions then please reach out! Our all time favorite shampoo is iGroom: Squeaky Clean. We also love Kelco, Chris Christensen, Tauro, and So Posh.

If your Pomeranian is itchy or flakey, you may want to try weekly or biweekly baths with a medicated shampoo like this one: HERE

Equipment for home grooming:

If you are grooming your Pomeranian at home (LINK to blog) then you will need some equipment. The most important thing is a velocity dryer. A pomeranian coat cannot be dried with a regular hair dryer as they are too weak to dry them all the way to the skin. Dry your pom to the skin to prevent matting and skin issues, this also keeps them smelling fresh as they will not get a “wet dog” smell. You will also need a grooming table if you don't have a good place to groom already. You may also want a raised bath that you can place in your bath or shower- this will save your back! You will want some shears if you are going to trim your pom at home.

Supplements:

Supplements are not always necessary, but in some cases they can help your dog with specific issues that they are having. A probiotic may help improve a dogs stools, or help a dog with recurring UTI’s. Fish oil might help a dog who has dry skin or a dull coat and Pumpkin may help clear up occasional diarrhea. If you have questions on what supplements might benefit your pom, contact me or consult with your Vet.

White Pomeranians:

If you are bringing home a white or cream pomeranian, you may want to do a few extra things to keep them looking their best! Using a whitening shampoo and feeding a proper diet that helps prevent tear staining will go a long way! Here is our list of extra things you can try if you are getting a white pom! HERE

Miscellaneous:

Every dog is an individual, so what one dog loves, another might not. We have had many Pomeranians over the years, and there are some things that seem to be a hit with most of our dogs. We have compiled a list of toys, treats, beds, and more that our dogs love, plus some things that we use daily and recommend (kennels, pens, potty pads, etc.)

Flea and Tick Prevention:

Depending on where you live, you will likely want to use flea and tick prevention. We use and recommend Revolution for Flea, Tick, and Heartworm prevention. We have never had a dog have a negative reaction to this medication, and find it to be effective. This must be purchased through a vet.
